  • He said himself that he wanted the soprano line “towering over the orchestra”, and it certainly does that.
  • … It’s hard, for example, to imagine that the BBC will ever again use an operatic aria as the theme for their World Cup coverage, as they did with “Nessun Dorma” for Italia ’90.

On Saturday, June 4 there’s a classic car display in the city centre, including vintage cars from 1952 and other classic vehicles of note. Classic Album Sundays tells the stories behind the albums that have shaped our culture and in some cases, our lives. I wonder whether someone could explain to me why classical music gets the “elitist” judgement levelled against it. It is vanishing from the public sphere along with classical music. The issue is not whether classical and opera are elitist, they rightly are, and elite music is good for the masses on many levels, it’s the PC pejorative of elite as ‘wrong’. All decided by private schoolies at the BBC etc who attended Oxford.

And this section of the overture, called The March of the Swiss Soldiers, doesn’t even make another appearance in the five-hour long opera. It actually comes from Puccini’s final opera Turandot, which was left unfinished when he died. It tells the story of the brutal princess Turandot and her murderous reign. Bizet’s opera Carmen from 1875 is jam-packed with catchy tunes – from the ‘Toreador’s Song’ to the ‘Habanera’ and the aria ‘L’amour est un oiseau rebelle’ to the Overture itself. This piece by Bach might not have the catchiest title, but we guarantee you’ll know the famous opening.

BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Tom Borrow reflects on his debut appearances at concert halls…

Celebrating their 50th Anniversary, the Brodsky Quartet has performed more than 3000 concerts on the major concert stages of the world and has released more than sixty recordings. It’s proof that intense emotion can come from the most unlikely of people. We don’t want to get all mushy on you, but there’s something spectacularly English about how the ultimate stiff-upper-lipped curmudgeon, Edward Elgar, was able to convey his emotions in music rather than in words or actions. His private life was surprisingly tumultuous (that’s another story), and in pieces like the Cello Concerto it’s as if the gasket has blown and Elgar is finally able to let out all the pent-up emotion in a focused blast. No other composer could’ve made it more entertaining (listen out for death shrieks!), or more rewarding. The epic final few minutes are a stupidly generous reward on their own, but getting there is half the fun.

The Story of Patti Smith Horses

Realising for the first time that the world of opera could actually be this immersive is a very, very special feeling. Wagner’s whole four-opera cycle has a terrible reputation as simply ‘that exhausting long opera’ – but that perception couldn’t be further from the truth. The Ring Cycle is a fundamentally unhinged work of staggering genius, and the peak of operatic indulgence, excess and excellence.

Women Composers

Expect energy, freshness and boundless enthusiasm from the young musicians of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra, as they perform sumptuous music by three classical pioneers. Sign up for updates about events, news and special offers. A must for anyone intersted in the history of classic music. Tchaikovsky was surely one of the most personally troubled of the great composers – and this symphony was essentially the outpouring of many of his issues, in a way.

Featuring new recordings of Handel’s La Resurrezione, Beethoven’s piano concertos, Rachmaninov’s… Switzerland’s prestigious concert series has teamed up with the I&I Foundation to premiere three pieces this summer. Roxy Music were such a trailblazing force that they now reside as the quintessential ‘Guess the Year Quiz’ trip-up merchants. You hear ‘Virginia Plain’ and instinctively the sound, production and avant-garde performance takes years off its actual age. With the help of Brian Eno in this department, Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music helped to smash the shackles beginning to form on turgid rock ’n’ roll at just the right time.
